Drivers of Licensing Success
Technology transfer offices engage in many different activities. However, a core responsibility includes obtaining intellectual property protection for innovations and licensing those innovations to industry. In this discussion, we look at the factors that impact success of a technology transfer office — success being defined as the number of licenses executed per year.
Based on data from the AUTM Licensing Activities Survey (AUTM-LAS), we examined the impact of the size of the research enterprise, staff (licensing and non-licensing FTEs), and total legal fees incurred on the number of licenses executed.
Due to the large variation of the research enterprise of the institutions, the institutions were grouped in four quartiles based on the size of the research enterprise.
