Whether faculty or students, university innovation is critical. But what does it take to build innovator capacity? This series of workshops, designed for faculty and students, This series introduces participants to the process of commercializing technologies and innovations. This series of workshops provides the fundamental concepts of understanding what it takes to commercialize a technology. 

  • Session I: What is Innovation?

This session explores the concept of innovation. From defining innovation, to the way it occurs, and what can be done to foster an environment where innovation leads to application of new and improved ideas.

  • Session 2: How to Protect Your Innovation

Intellectual property protection can be a significant expense for a company. In this session, you will learn about the basic types of intellectual property including patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets and know-how. Tangible property will also be described. Using examples, various intellectual property protection strategies will be discussed to show how different strategies can be used to optimize protection and cost.

  • Session 3: Marketing Your Innovation

Learn how to efficiently do market research, validate your product, and market your innovation based on the audience. Marketing is essential to attracting collaboration partners, raising funds for development, or selling to the end users. Starting with assessing the innovation to defining the product, the essential concepts of market research and lead generation are discussed.

  • Session 4: Nuts and Bolts of Agreements

Many types of agreements are used to conduct intellectual property development and transactions. Starting with non-disclosure agreements to licenses and collaborations the session will cover the essential elements of these agreements with a special focus on collaboration agreements and license agreements.

  • Session 5: Negotiating an Agreement

This course prepares you for negotiations by providing insights in negotiation strategy, identifying and sharing needs to achieve success. The participants will also learn how prepare for negotiation and how to anticipate and react in the negotiation process. Active case studies are used to illustrate key points.
